Goshen, IN - Justicia Global, an international organization of young
people committed to justice and peace, will hold two activities in Newcomer 19 at Goshen College this
weekend.
On Friday, January 13 at 7 p.m. Justicia Global and local student groups will host a forum on social change. We are honored to welcome two members of Justicia Global from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Berenice Pacheco Salazar and Mariela Jáquez. They will speak on realities in the Dominican Republic today, discuss the struggle for women's rights, and describe the work of their social change organization in the Dominican Republic.
"We're excited to bring together people who are working for justice in different parts of the
world," said Tim Shenk, Justicia Global's U.S. Coordinator. "We have so much to learn from
each other. As we educate ourselves and form relationships across borders, we're building an
alternative kind of globalization - one based on mutual understanding, solidarity, and peace."
In addition, local organizations will be invited to share about their activities and vision for
a more just society. Grupo NIV, a local organization of young Latinos and Latinas, will provide
live music.
On Saturday, January 14 from 1-4 p.m. Justicia Global will host a workshop on creating a long-term
strategies for positive change in our communities and our world. Shenk, who is a 2000 Goshen High
School graduate, will be the lead facilitator.
"In our society, we're not taught how to look down the road too far," Shenk said.
"Everything revolves around instant gratification. Students specifically learn to
focus on the present – on this assignment, on this semester. If we as young people are
committed to creating better lives for ourselves and those around us,
we have to learn how to think in the long-term."
Our two Dominican speakers bring a wealth of experience in educating and mobilizing people in
their communities. Ms. Pacheco is a founder and facilitator of Perla, an empowerment group for
Dominican women. Ms. Jáquez works with domestic violence issues through the Center for Gender Studies at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo.
Goshen College is a natural venue in which to host people from the Dominican Republic. Hundreds of students have studied in this Caribbean nation through Goshen College's Study/Service Term.
Co-sponsors of the weekend's events include: Goshen College Latino Student Union, Grupo NIV, Goshen High School Peace Club, and the Goshen College Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies program.
