Documentary on Convite

Justicia Global is proud to present the documentary, "Convite: in unity there is strength" about the Association of Convites Campesinos del Ramón, an organization in the San Cristóbal province with whom we have developed strong ties and community work.

This documentary presents the tradition of work in solidarity among farmers that the Convite embodies. The video aims to share this experience and show the necessity of unity among people to build a society of justice for all.

We thank videographer James Weber for his collaboration in this project. Through Justicia Global's Voluntariado program, James headed up the production and editing teams to make this documentary a reality.

Inventemos

Justicia Global has made a video responding to the re-election campaign of Dominican President Leonel Fernandez.

Fernandez's advertising campaign uses a guy in black who spray paints political slogans supporting the President. The principal message is "No inventen."

No inventen -- don't invent -- is a Dominicanism most often told to children. It means "don't try anything new, don't screw around." Leonel is directing this no inventen to the Dominican people.

The Justicia Global message is, Inventemos -- "let's invent." Then, Sólo el pueblo salva el pueblo. "Only the people save the people."

Medicinal plants: 'A gift from God'

Above: Women from Jamey, San Cristóbal chop orange and eucaliptus leaves in preparation for making a syrup for the flu.

Justicia Global's medicinal plants workshops in the San Cristóbal province are getting rave reviews from the participants.

One man related how he was able to help a neighbor who was suffering from pains in his leg: "I rubbed the medicine we made on his leg, and after a little bit he asked, 'What did you put on there? That was like a gift from God!'”

A woman commented: "My daughter had a bad cold. She took a lot of pills, but what really cured her was the syrup we learned how to make here."

Another man captured the main objective of the workshops, that is, organizing the community. He said, "Every day more people will hear about what we're doing. I understand that this is going to be big."

Justicia Global presents 'Fuerza'

The Economics and Development group of Justicia Global presented the documentary "Fuerza" at a cinema-forum on Saturday, February 3.

“Fuerza” is a bilingual documentary that shows an in-depth look at the lives of people in two small towns affected by immigration: Apan, Hidalgo, México and Goshen, Indiana, United States.

We were honored to welcome the editor of the documentary, James Weber. Weber is from the United States and is studying in the Dominican Republic through a program of Goshen College.

Commemorating Duarte's birth

On Friday, January 26 we commemorated the birth of founding father Juan Pablo Duarte with a march, traditional drumming and street theater.

The slogan of the event was, Let us reclaim the history of our organized populace and build in the present a dignified future!

We started at la Puerta de la Misericordia in the Colonial Zone and walked to the Parque Duarte during this commemorative and cultural activity.

Justicia Global is a social organization with international and community components. Our principal goal is the construction of a culture of solidarity through the work with several sectors: young adults, students, families, and children. While our main location is in the Dominican Republic, we have members throughout Latin America, the United States, and recently in Europe.

We live in a world full of social inequalities and injustices at many different levels. Thirty thousand children die each day of preventable sicknesses; young adults are confronted with a lack of opportunities to find employment and education; a large percentage of women are insecure because of the violence they face both in the streets as in their own homes; workers suffer of poor labor conditions; every day the environment suffers because of the abuse of human beings; besides all the racial inequalities and the unequal distribution of wealth that exists in our world.

Justicia Global calls people to open their eyes and wake up to this social reality and its specific manifestations in their own communities. Toward this end, we find the need to create international networks of cooperation. Together we can work toward building a society of respect of human rights, justice, solidarity, and peace.
