Juan Pablo Duarte and his vision for the future

Here we present an excerpt of the speech, “Five Principles for a Grand Finale,” by Professor Narciso González in February 1987. This speech was a contribution to the reclaiming of the political thought of founder Juan Pablo Duarte.

Juan Pablo, born on January 26, 1813, left us not only a Republic, but Five Principles for a Grand Finale.

1
“National independence is the source and guarantee of our patriotic liberties.”

The Dominican Republic is today a country that depends on the world powers. As a dependent country we suffer from the three negative consequences that benefit Empire: economic exploitation, political alignment and cultural penetration.

2
“The Homeland is the People”

Duarte affirmed his love for all people. For Duarte, the Homeland is the People and not a small group that gets rich at the cost of the majority’s misery. This small group he called “miserable” and he had this to say about them:

“While we do not punish the traitors as we should, the good and true Dominicans will be forever victims of their plotting.”

3
“To obtain happiness, we must practice Justice.”

Dreams are realized through hard work, completing our tasks and making them respect our rights. A scholar of our time said: “If you want to achieve peace, you must work for justice.”

4
“We need a governmental structure that is
more participatory than these old three branches.”

Duarte’s ideas for a State include local or municipal power and establish a popular, independent essence for government.

5
“It is essential to conserve the quality of thought, feeling and action.”

In a letter to his companions in struggle, Duarte wrote: “Never has it been as necessary as today to have good health, a good heart and good judgment; today as men without judgment or hearts conspire against the health of the Homeland.”

When we elevate the quality of our thought, feeling and action, we will be able to reinforce our commitment to Unity, Consciousness, Organization, Combativeness and Discipline.
