Justicia Global is working with a group of girls and boys in the Herrera neighborhood of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. We meet every Saturday to paint and draw, play cooperative games and talk about the values of justice and equality.

On Saturday, April 29, 2006 a group of 17 of us went on a trip up the mountains to the Federation of Farmers in the Blanco area of the Bonao province. There we got to know the local group of Young Ecologists, who gave us a presentation on the problem of trash in our country. They taught us the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
The Young Ecologists played several instruments for us that they'd made from recycled materials: a drum out of gallon jugs, a flute from a piece of PVC tubing, maracas and other noisemakers from dried coconut husks. Our group was especially fascinated by the masks and puppets, also made from recycled materials.
We reflected on the importance of taking care of the environment, and we learned how to pick up trash and not litter.
We got to see the rabbits and goats that they raise at the Federation; we ate a delicious lunch of rice, beans and chicken; and we played cooperative games like the Human Knot. In the late afternoon, we all slept on the bus back to the capital.
In Herrera -a relatively new neighborhood for Justicia Global- we're using the same organizational strategies that have been so successful in the Simón Bolívar neighborhood during the past five years.
We plan fun, educational activities with kids in the area, helping them to take leadership as they are able. An important part of every activity is a reflection about the values we're trying to encourage: solidarity, respect, cooperation, trust, discipline and love. These groups are one way we do community organizing in the neighborhoods.

In October 2005, Justicia Global coordinated the weekend-long event called, "DR-CAFTA: What are they getting us into?" The objective was to educate people about the free trade agreement, DR-CAFTA, between the Dominican Republic, Central America, and the United States.
We were in the Herrera neighborhood all day Saturday, October 8 and in the Simón Bolívar neighborhood on Sunday the 9th.

The children participated in many ways throughout the weekend. There were special activities for young children, informative murals, educational materials for the whole family, open discussions with experts on the topic, music, skits, cooperative games, and more.

Justicia Global has a space for kids (formerly called SUCRE) where we model values such as respect,
cooperation, trust, discipline, and love.

We do this in several creative ways: Painting, Theatre, Literature, Music, Education, and Field Trips.
We are functioning in the Simón Bolívar and Herrera neighborhoods of Santo Domingo and in the Andrés area of Boca Chica. These activities with children have become a focal point of activism in the community as well as effecting real positive change in the behavior and life vision of the children who participate. |
