Justicia Global celebrated its VI International Meetings in Ithaca, New York, USA from November 27-30, 2006.
We presented our organization and shared experiences with students and professors at three universities, community leaders and representatives of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign -- with the goal of strengthening international bonds of solidarity.
The photograph, taken in the public presentation of Justicia Global at Ithaca College, shows an example of the cooperative games we use in our meetings. Besides being fun icebreakers, these games allow us space to talk about trust, unity and many other values we share in Justicia Global.
"Dr. CAFTA- your medicine: does it save me or kill me?"
On Tuesday, November 28, 2006 the Economics and Development Circle of Justicia Global held its XIV Socioeconomic Analysis at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
This activity focused on the free trade agreement, DR-CAFTA, that will go into effect soon in the Dominican Republic.
The principal speakers were Dálida Acosta and Ángela Hernández. Also speaking at the event were Nicolás Hernández, a businessman, and two members of the Association of Convites of el Ramón, San Cristóbal.

"DR.CAFTA? I've learned it's not a doctor..."
For the event
we produced an informative bulletin on
the DR-CAFTA agreement. In it we explain what the agreement is about and the lies and realities told about it.

On Sunday, November 19 Justicia Global
and la Asociación de Convites Campesino del Ramón held a workshop on medicinal plants in San Cristóbal.
People, ages five to a hundred and five, attended from eight communities throughout the San Cristóbal province.
The two organizations saw the necessity of holding a workshop to learn new ways of relating to our bodies, our health and the environment. |
We learned to use the plants we find in our own back yards to heal ourselves and prevent sickness. The participants in the workshop presented on the medicinal uses of garlic, bananas, onions, lemons, carrots, oranges and mangoes.

On Sunday, November 19 Justicia Global held a Family Gathering in Andrés, Boca Chica where we have been working with a group of girls and boys.
This gathering served as the formal presentation of our organization to the parents of the children with whom we're working. The children presented an original theater production and we played cooperative games to illustrate our values and our vision of a culture of solidarity. We finished the event with a delicious lunch prepared by various members of Justicia Global from the community.

"Students: Let's walk planting Sophias! Let's construct the path!"
On Saturday, November 18, the different groups of university and high school students of Justicia Global met for an assembly.
In this way we were able to evaluate the work we've been doing between September and November in our schools.
Remembering the role that students have played in the history of social movements in Latin America and the world, Justicia Global reinforced its commitment to seek creative ways to build critical consciousness and commitment to social justice in students today.

On October 29 we celebrated "Justicia Global Palos del campo y los de la ciudad"
in San Cristóbal with the members of the Asociación de Convites Campesino del Ramón. "Palos" are the traditional Dominican drums visible in the image. Drummers from San Cristóbal and musicians from the Santo Domingo band,
Batey 0, shared in a rich exchange of percussion and dance.
The event's slogan has two meanings: "Global Justice: Drums from the country and from the city" and "Global Justice for those from the country and from the city."

Justicia Global has begun painting murals on walls in communities where we work.
In Villa Duarte (above, left) we painted a mural commemorating the September 24 March for Peace we helped to organize in that neighborhood of Santo Domingo Este.
In Maluco of San Cristóbal (right) we painted a mural to commemorate the founding of the groups of children and adolescents there.

ATTENTION! Textbooks meant to DECEIVE

Cartoon
Title: Sofia and Libertad talk about getting a quality education.
Libertad (left): Sofia, I want to study... But in school they only teach us to copy, not to ask questions.
Sofia: Libertad, we have the right to demand a quality education that helps us develop capacities in critical thinking and analysis... and you can't achieve that by just putting computers in the classrooms...
The 2006-2007 School Year has begun, and with it come the complaints about the high costs of textbooks and school supplies.
Justicia Global did an investigation on textbooks that are used in the Dominican Republic, and we found them to be deceiving and shallow as well as being very expensive.
This special edition of "Abre los Ojos" reveals the twisted reality our children are learning about in school -- and we present our response to the failures of the Dominican school system.
